William L. Hassler, Sr. of Lower Alloways Creek passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, October 28, 2021.
Born in Salem to the late Joseph and Mary (Volk) Hassler. Bill is predeceased by his wife of 61 year Joan (Mulford) Hassler. He is survived by his sons William (Christine) of Pennsville, Kenneth (Brenda), David, and Douglas (Jaime) all of LAC. He is also survived by two adopted children Corey and Whitney Vanneman. Additionally, he is survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Bill also was part of a large family, where he is survived by one brother, Edward (Elsinboro) and predeceased by brothers Francis, Morant, John, George, Joseph Jr., Thomas, Ralph, Paul, Robert, David, and two sisters, Matilda Green and Gertrude Meyers. Bill graduated from Salem High School in 1947, where he played football and track. Bill then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. While at Cherry Point, NC he continued his love for football playing for the USMC Cherry Point Flyers. Returning home, he and his good friend Ernest Davis started Hassler and Davis Construction in Salem. Later years after selling the business, Bill continued to work in many fields, the Ironworkers local union, General Manager and an original owner of Wild Oaks Country Club, Master Plumber for Campbell ‘s Plumbing and in the final years maintaining the cemetery for St. Mary’s RC Church in Salem. Bill was active in St. Mary’s RC Church, where he participated in the school facility development, graveyard and long time usher. He also participated in many community organizations, where he served as Battalion Chief of the Washington Fire Company, and was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, the Salem Exchange Club, Knights of Columbus, the Salem American Legion and the VFW Post 253. For pleasure, Bill and his wife enjoyed traveling where they traveled every summer across the US, to include Alaska in 1966. In later years he enjoyed skiing with his family where he built a home in Vermont with his good friends, to include Ken Homan of Quinton. But his passion was mowing his many acres of grass.

MASS of CHRISTAIN BURIAL will be celebrated 10:00 AM, Monday, November 1st in St. Mary's Roman Catholic, Church, 25 Oak Street, Salem, NJ 08079; burial will follow in the church cemetery.
