Elizabeth Jones Obituary

Elizabeth P. Jones, life-long resident of Salem and Pennsville, died at the age of 90 on Wednesday, October 28, 2020.

Born in Salem, NJ to Gustav and Minna Pankoke, who emigrated from Bad Salzuflen, Germany in 1923 & 1925.  She was a 1947 graduate of Salem High School and then worked as a stenographer at Anchor Hocking Glass where she met her husband, William C. Jones, Jr. and married in 1954.  Later she worked at Mannington Mills.  She also served as Administrative Assistant for two Chiefs of Police in Pennsville for many years.  She and her husband, Bill, resided in Pennsville where they raised two daughters, Leslie and Karen.

Elizabeth had many interests and was engaged with many community organizations.  When she was quite young, she played the old pump organ at St. Mary’s Church and later started its first Children’s Choir.  As a teenager, she worked as an usherette at the Fenwick movie theater in Salem which spawned her interest in Hollywood celebrities and her collection of classic movie stars’ biographies.  She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 30 years, cultivating many life-long friendships.  Being an avid reader, she was a member of the Riverview Readers Book Club and served as a volunteer librarian at St. Mary’s Elementary School in the 1990’s.  She was also a member of St. Mary’s Rosary Guild.  For over 25 years, Elizabeth served on the Board of Visiting Nurses Association of Pennsville.  In 1998, she embraced the opportunity to visit her 17 first cousins living in Germany, with whom she communicated but never met.  Not only did she enjoy journeys to England, France and Italy, but extended trips to visit her grandchildren living in Georgia were especially gratifying.

Elizabeth is predeceased by her husband, William C. Jones, Jr.; her brother, Paul Pankok and his wife Dorothy; and sister, Agnes Williams.  She is survived by her two daughters, Leslie Jones Irish and her husband David of New York City, and Karen Greer of McDonough, GA with her three children, Evan Greer of Ft. Worth, TX, Carly and Tanner Greer, both of Georgia.  Also surviving her are sisters-in-law:  Geraldine Jones who has been a source of spiritual comfort and companionship, Clare Pankok Jones, Nancy Jones; brothers-in-law, J. Richard Jones and David O. Williams; cousin Peggy Newton; 17 nephews and nieces, with special mention to her namesake, Elizabeth Pankok Davis, and her closest friend of 82 years, Elisabeth T. Gallagher.
