Doris Jean (Loper) Chappius

Doris Jean Loper Chappius, 83, of Salem, NJ passed away on September 27, 2020, surrounded by her family.  She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Donald Chappius; children Donna Bacon and Doug Chappius (Bonnie); 4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; and sister, Janet Poston.  She was pre-deceased by her parents, Miriam and Samuel Loper, Jr. and son-in-law Richard Bacon.

Doris graduated from Salem High School in 1954 and, throughout her life, held secretarial positions at many local companies, including Henry D. Young Insurance Co., Waddington Dairy, and Dr. Fouad Michail, Optometrist.   As a life-long member of Memorial Baptist Church in Salem, she served in many capacities in Sunday School, School of Missions, White Cross, yard sales, and choir.  She has also been very active with Salem High School Alumni Association, planning many reunions, staffing booths at public events, and serving on the Scholarship Selection Committee for each year’s graduating class. 

Her most cherished times were spent with family and friends.  Rarely did she miss a game, meet, concert, or presentation involving her children or grandchildren.  She never forgot to acknowledge a birthday or event within her large extended circle of relatives and friends.  Much of her time was spent making and delivering meals, cookies, or homemade cards to anyone that needed her kindness.  Her memory will be held dear by so many.

A casual, outdoor luncheon reception will be held in Doris’s honor on Saturday, October 3, 2020 on the grounds of the Inn at Salem Country Club from 12:30-3:00 pm.  Seating will also be available indoors—please bring a mask for indoors and please respect social distancing measures while outdoors.  In her memory, donations to the charity of your choice are very much appreciated.
