Donald R. Smith

Donald R. Smith, 89, of Alloway died Saturday at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia. 

Born in Salem, he lived in Salem County for most of his life. He worked for A/C Elect. Co. as a welder before becoming disabled. He was a ham radio operator for many years. He was a member of Ruritan and the Democrat Clubs and served as the commander of the Alloway VFW. He was a long-time deacon at the Alloway Baptist Church. He served in the Army’s 1st Signal Corp. He was predeceased by his mother, Eldora LaCount Davenport, father Howard Smith, brothers, Howard, Thomas & Russell and sisters, Mary Hogate & Viola Carmichael and a son, Michael and daughter, Princess Kelley.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha, sisters, Leona Flowers and Grace Carmichael, sons, Donald Jr., Thomas, Herb Daley, Bob Daley, Dave Daley and daughters, Dawn Sewell and Lisa Turner, 25 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Services will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 13th in WOODSIDE FUNERAL HOME, 613 Salem Quinton Rd., Rt. 49, Salem, NJ 08079 (Quinton Twp.) where friends may call after 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Alloway Baptist Cemetery.
